Reportajes en LD: la década de 2000 y el comercio de órganos

Los últimos reportajes económicos que he publicado en Libertad Digital:

Recomiendo especialmente el último, sobre el comercio de órganos. Copio un par de párrafos.

El problema:

En EEUU la lista de espera se ha multiplicado por cinco desde 1990 a 2009, pasando de 20.000 a 100.000 personas. Aproximadamente 6.500 pacientes fallecen cada año esperando trasplante, y la cifra no incluye a los que son sacados de la lista por enfermar durante la espera dejando de ser elegibles para trasplante. De ellos mueren más de 2.000 anualmente. En España, la lista de espera es de 5.000 personas. Según datos de la Organización Nacional de Trasplantes, aproximadamente un 10% de los pacientes muere a la espera de recibir un trasplante.

La solución aplicada en Irán (quizás el único ámbito en el que su gobierno tiene algo que enseñarnos):

Del 14 al 29 de Octubre está teniendo lugar el BFI 53rd London Film Festival. Ayer fui a una sesión doble de cine de Oriente Medio en el Vue de Leicester Sq.: About Elly, iraní, y Ajami, una coproducción alemana-israelí. Las dos me gustaron bastante, aunque mi interés no resida tanto en el género como en su trasfondo o contexto sociológico/político. Alguien que no tenga un interés previo por conocer mejor cómo es la sociedad iraní (About Elly) o la israelí (Ajami) seguramente las aprecie menos, aunque sean en sí mismas buenas películas.

La realidad en Irán, vista por una exiliada

Cada mes un reputado liberal francés organiza debates en su casa cerca de Oxford Street y nos juntamos dos o tres docenas de liberales, simpatizantes y gente de otras tendencias pero de mente inquisitiva. Suele haber bastantes franceses pero el grupo es muy diverso. Hace dos semanas, en una de estas reuniones, tuve el place de conocer a Afasaneh Leissner, una mujer iraniana exiliada desde 1979 y ahora residente en Londres. Afsaneh emigró a Francia cuando cayó el Sha, pensando que podría regresar pronto. Pero la Revolución Islámica no invitaba a la vuelta, y acabó estudiando en Francia y luego en América. Desde 1993 vive y trabaja en el Reino Unido. En 1998 viajó a Irán por primera vez desde que marchó al exilio, encontrando un país irreconocible y transformado a peor. Desde entonces ha ido viajando regularmente a Irán, donde aún tiene familia y amigos, la última vez en abril de este año.

Afsaneh dio una charla este verano sobre los acontecimientos que se están sucediendo en Irán a la que no pude asistir. Ha tenido el detalle de enviarme sus notas y me ha dado permiso para publicarlas. Es un documento extraordinario que explica qué está pasando en Irán y cuáles son los rasgos característicos del régimen y su represión. Afsaneh empieza así su ponencia:

What I put forward to you tonight is some raw material to engage in a conversation, or perhaps contemplation.

It is my opinion and is not impartial. It is shaped by my upbringing, the society I grew up in, the value system and ethics of that society.

I am not impartial for impartiality is indifference and I am not indifferent to the Persian question. This is about the place I grew up in, the country that I feel I belong to and proudly so, even though the number of the years I have lived abroad has surpassed those I lived in Iran.

I have chosen three main themes for this talk. I think these are key issues in any attempt to understand Iran today.

The themes that I propose to discuss are the following:

- Who are the people that are defying death in the streets of big cities in Iran today and what are their aspirations?

- The curse and blessing of oil, and how it has shaped the destiny of Iran;

- The media coverage of Iran in the West.

Ron Paul y la condena moral del régimen iraní

El congresista liberal Ron Paul se ha abstenido en la votación de condena al régimen iraní de la Cámara de Representantes, arguyendo que la Constitución no concede a esa cámara la prerrogativa de pronunciarse sobre asuntos que afectan a otro país que no representa.

La cámara no estaba votando ninguna declaración de guerra, sino simplemente una condena moral. Ron Paul se opone por buenas razones a una intervención militar en Irán, ¿pero implica su postura no-intervencionista que debemos permanecer callados ante la injusticia que tiene lugar más allá de nuestra fronteras? ¿Que ni siquiera podemos expresar nuestra repulsa moral por las acciones del régimen iraní? Ésta es la objeción que plantea Grant Harvers en Taki Mag, que es anti-intervencionista pero cree que el Congreso debe pronunciarse sobre la represión en Irán.

Perhaps paleos who have recently gone on record opposing “interference” and “intervention” in Iran need to define exactly what they mean by these terms. Do interference and intervention refer to the unlikely act of sending in the Marines, or do these words also include any moral support for embattled democratic forces in Iran? While I support paleos who condemn military intervention in Iran in light of the sorry history of past interventions in the Middle East, I fail to see why democratic governments should hold their rhetorical fire against the mullahs. Surely we are not condemned to the dualistic and extreme choice between outright military intervention and eerie silence, which offers no hope to human beings like the frightened Iranian woman I mentioned earlier.

Pero la condena moral por parte del Congreso americano no está libre de consecuencias, y Harvert debería preguntarse si van a ser positivas para los iraníes en lugar de asumirlo. La respuesta de Daniel Larison en The American Conservative me parece muy atinada. Copio los fragmentos relevantes:

En contra de interferir en Irán

Phil Giraldi, ex agente de la CIA y de la inteligencia militar por 20 años, advierte que Mousavi probablemente no es el reformista que algunos creen que es. Pasa a menudo que proyectamos nuestras esperanzas en un determinado político o partido sin que haya razones sustanciales para ello.

Mir Hossein Mousavi is a reformer and modernist, isn’t he? Perhaps not. He has always been extremely conservative in his political alignments. As Prime Minister in 1981–9, he was regarded as a hardliner. He started Iran’s nuclear program, helped found Hezbollah and may have directed the attack on the Marine barracks in Beirut. He is, in reality, a defender of extremely corrupt vested interests. That he has attracted the support of the so-called "Gucci crowd" of twentyish twitterers does not mean that he has embraced western values. As president, he would not abandon nuclear energy and would not immediately begin to talk nice to Barack Obama. His reformer credentials are pretty much non-existent, the creation of a media and an engaged punditry that wants to explain the Iran crisis in terms that a European or American audience would find comfortable.

Giraldi opina que, por el bien de los iraníes, es prudente y recomendable que Estados Unidos se mantenga al margen. Si tiene que haber un cambio, es mejor que sea impulsado desde abajo, desde el pueblo.

La revolución pre-política de Irán

William Pfaff sobre la revolución no tan revolucionaria que está teniendo lugar en Irán.

What is being challenged is the reactionary social and political form the Iranian system has assumed under Ahmadinejad and the most conservative clerics. The Islamic state itself is not, or at least not yet, in real danger.

This is a peculiarly modern "revolution," where the call is not to overturn the Islamic system but for young people, and not only the young, to have a private life and speak freely to their companions, to play popular music and freely see and make movies – for girls to let their hair escape from under the veil and wear a touch of cosmetics.

It might be called a pre-political revolt. The countries this kind of revolt will eventually affect most, after Iran, will be Saudi Arabia and the other Muslim countries that are at the same time rich and repressive and suffer hypocritical male ruling elites.

Una noticia relacionada: el ayatolá Montazaeri's, al parecer una figura importante dentro del régimen, ha escrito una carta dirigida al pueblo en el que critica en términos bastante duros la reacción del Gobierno y defiende la causa de los manifestantes. En su carta el ayatolá destaca estos tres puntos:

Las lágrimas de cocodrilo de los neocones

Glenn Greenwald sobre la hipocresía de quienes expresan solidaridad hacia el mismo pueblo que hace poco querían bombardear a mansalva (Norman Podhoretz dijo literalmente que había que "bombardear y hacer pedazos a los iraníes", y Giuliani no descartó un ataque nuclear).

Much of the same faction now claiming such concern for the welfare of The Iranian People are the same people who have long been advocating a military attack on Iran and the dropping of large numbers of bombs on their country -- actions which would result in the slaughter of many of those very same Iranian People.  During the presidential campaign, John McCain infamously sang about Bomb, Bomb, Bomb-ing Iran.  The Wall St. Journal published a war screed from Commentary's Norman Podhoretz entitled "The Case for Bombing Iran," and following that, Podhoretz said in an interview that he "hopes and prays" that the U.S. "bombs the Iranians."  John Bolton and Joe Lieberman advocated the same bombing campaign, while Bill Kristol -- with typical prescience -- hopefully suggested that Bush might bomb Iran if Obama were elected.  Rudy Giuliani actually said he would be open to a first-strike nuclear attack on Iran in order to stop their nuclear program. Advocating a so-called "attack on Iran" or "bombing Iran" in fact means slaughtering huge numbers of the very same people who are on the streets of Tehran inspiring so many -- obliterating their homes and workplaces, destroying their communities, shattering the infrastructure of their society and their lives.  The same is true every time we start mulling the prospect of attacking and bombing another country as though it's some abstract decision in a video game.

La percepción de Occidente y la realidad iraní

Interesante análisis en Stratfor sobre la equivocada percepción que tenemos en Occidente de la calle iraní. Según George Friedman, sobrestimamos el apoyo que tiene la liberalización y las reformas modernizadoras entre la población, y subestimamos la popularidad de Ahmadinejad y el islamismo más reaccionario. Friedman opina que, si bien quizás ha habido fraude, no debería sorprendernos una victoria de Ahmadinejad.

Americans and Europeans have been misreading Iran for 30 years. Even after the shah fell, the myth has survived that a mass movement of people exists demanding liberalization — a movement that if encouraged by the West eventually would form a majority and rule the country. We call this outlook “iPod liberalism,” the idea that anyone who listens to rock ‘n’ roll on an iPod, writes blogs and knows what it means to Twitter must be an enthusiastic supporter of Western liberalism. Even more significantly, this outlook fails to recognize that iPod owners represent a small minority in Iran — a country that is poor, pious and content on the whole with the revolution forged 30 years ago.

There are undoubtedly people who want to liberalize the Iranian regime. They are to be found among the professional classes in Tehran, as well as among students. Many speak English, making them accessible to the touring journalists, diplomats and intelligence people who pass through. They are the ones who can speak to Westerners, and they are the ones willing to speak to Westerners. And these people give Westerners a wildly distorted view of Iran. They can create the impression that a fantastic liberalization is at hand — but not when you realize that iPod-owning Anglophones are not exactly the majority in Iran.

Me pregunto si lo mismo no es aplicable a Afganistán o Irak...

Raimondo sobre las elecciones en Irán

Justin Raimondo en Antiwar.com sobre las elecciones iraníes y sus implicaciones para la política exterior estadounidense.

Ahmadinejad has led his country into an economic dead end, with record unemployment, gas shortages, and a high inflation rate. That, combined with U.S. President Barack Obama’s remarkable outreach to the Iranians – a video message of friendship, an offer to negotiate with Iranian leaders without preconditions, and an unprecedented acknowledgment of the U.S. government’s role in overthrowing Mohammed Mossadegh’s democratically elected government in 1953 – would have sounded the death knell of the current gang if the election had been allowed to proceed unobstructed. As it was, the hard-liners sealed off Iran from the rest of the world as Mousavi’s overwhelming victory became apparent, placed the candidate under house arrest (or so it seems from numerous unconfirmed news reports), shut down the Internet, and unleashed their "Revolutionary Guards" on student-led protest demonstrations. (...)

So far, the Obama administration has kept its collective mouth shut pretty tight – except, of course, for Joe Biden – and that’s a good thing. What isn’t so good is that the White House will almost surely be forced to pronounce some sort of verdict or judgment on the apparently fraudulent election results. Criticism, however mild, coming from Washington, will surely be used by Ahmadinejad & Co. as a pretext to declare a state of "emergency" and engineer a total crackdown. And the possibility of a dramatic showdown between the two Iranian camps is increasing by the moment: Mousavi is reportedly calling for his followers to take to the streets in protest – although there is some fear that this may be a trap set by the regime – and what follows may very well turn out to be an Iranian replay of what happened in China’s Tiananmen Square, at least as far as the rest of the world sees it.

What this means, in terms of U.S. foreign policy, and the building "crisis" around U.S.-Iranian relations, is that the prospects for a negotiated settlement of the outstanding issues between the two countries have darkened considerably. Yes, I know Obama has declared his intention to soldier on in the "outreach" effort, but this will become increasingly untenable – and make it fairly easy for him to backtrack – as the authority and legitimacy of the Iranian government continues to deteriorate, as it will.

Me ha parecido especialmente interesante un artículo de Alan Bock, Rethinking Iran, abogando por la progresiva normalización de relaciones con Irán, incluso en caso de que Ahmedinejad se mantenga en el poder. El posicionamiento de Bock es polémico, pero creo que lo defiende con argumentos muy razonables.

Un Irán nuclear no es el apocalipsis (actualizado)

Este artículo en The American Conservative pone la amenaza de Irán en perspectiva. Michael Desch destaca la tesis de Kenneth Waltz de que la proliferación de armas nucleares, debido a su efecto fundamentalmente disuasivo, tiende a reducir la frecuencia e intensidad de las guerras. La principal asunción detrás de esta idea es que los Gobiernos actúan de forma racional y pronto se dan cuenta de las devastadoras consecuencias de una confrontación nuclear.

Desch menciona dos objeciones, relacionadas entre sí, a este argumento:

1) Al Gobierno iraní no le preocupa la vida de sus súbditos, luego no se verá disuadido por la posible aniquilación de millones de ciudadanos.

2) Irán es una teocracia movida por el odio y el fanatismo, y no hace cálculos racionales.

Copio la razonable respuesta de Desch:

Típica boda iraní

Ayer fui a una exposición de arte contemporéneo de Oriente Medio en la Saatchit Gallery, en Chelsea. Los artistas eran iraníes, iraquíes, libaneses, palestinos y quizás de alguna otra nacionalidad que no recuerdo. La calidad de las obras me pareció en general extraordinaria y con un evidente parentesco con el arte contemporáneo occidental, cuya influencia los autores han canalizado hacia sus propias raíces e inquietudes culturales (varios de ellos viven, además, en Occidente). Muchas de las obras eran un ejercicio de introspección en la sociedad árabe y sus valores, y abundaba la crítica social y política. Las obras iraníes eran quizás las más críticas, y me sorprendió saber que sus autores no estaban exiliados.

Destaco en particular dos piezas de Rokni Haerizadeh, que vive y trabaja en Teherán, sobre la hipocresía y las contradicciones de la sociedad iraní.

La primera es "Typical Iranian Wedding" (Típica boda iraní), que caricaturiza el festín de una boda. Hombres y mujeres están separados por una cortina: en el panel derecho (arriba) los hombres gozan de un gran banquete, música en directo, exhuberante decoración, luz tenue y predomina un ambiente de lujuria; en el panel izquierdo (abajo) las mujeres hablan y bailan, el único manjar que hay en la mesa es una pieza de pavo y el local está muy iluminado, para evitar un excesivo espíritu festivo.

The Economist: los hijos de la revolución iraní

The Economist sobre los jóvenes iraníes, 30 años después de la Revolución islámica.

Many of Iran's youth are disenchanted with the revolution. The “Islamic democracy” offered by Mr Khatami failed to address their desire for a freer society. Mr Ahmadinejad’s conservatism has added to their woes. Young Iranians find a multiplicity of ways to rebel against the regime’s control: with alcohol fuelled parties, painted nails or flirtatious behaviour on the street.

Many outsiders, who dislike the regime and wish to see it fall, hope that Iran’s disaffected youth could bring about its demise. But the anger that many young people share at the failures of their government is unlikely to topple it. Though they may chafe at its restraints, religion remains important to many young Iranians. By and large, they do not wish to see Iran become a secular country and few would describe themselves as atheists. But they would rather see Islam confined to their private lives and eliminated from the public sphere.

More importantly, young Iranians have a strong sense of national pride. They may grumble about the strictures of the Islamic Republic and the failings of Mr Ahmadinejad but there is little sign that they want to dispense with the revolution just yet. Like the founding fathers of the revolution, they resent fiercely any hint of Western meddling in Iranian affairs. They may be unhappy with their leaders and resent their rule, but they will rally round them in the face of outside attack.
